Memorize with your heart. Not with your head. You have to put your body into it. I’ve been trying to see the sounds in my head Been trying to hear the dreams that she thread Above our bed’s a tangled web. Discarded mess. A mess of a bless that says: Memorize with your heart. Not with your head. You have to put your body into it. Been trying to force these thoughts out instead but go for a walk and let my lost be lead. And where I’m lead. Right down from ledge. To take it step by step. A step from the ledge that says... ‘The only Strokes I was influenced by’ she said ‘Were the strokes I received from you.’ And when we grew all the past was new and we’re all part of it too.

He’s not susceptible to advertising He broadcasts his message from the top of his Facebook wall He wants you to know that he’s never been sadder But he’s not susceptible to advertising What a strange coincidence Can’t think straight. Can’t make sense. I tell you I’m not susceptible to advertising My head is a turnstile struggling to take in it all I want you to know that I’ve never seen Saturn But I’m not susceptible to advertising What a strange coincidence (That’s the way they get you to pay) Can’t think straight. Can’t make sense. (I obey what you display) What I first want is just what I get (That’s the way they get you to pay) What I first wanted was programmed by this apparatus Said ‘if you think this don’t apply to you And you’d never set a foot in the swamp The life that you live that’s just advertising for the shop The art you’re making that’s just advertising for the shop’ For the shop. What a strange coincidence. (That’s the way they get you to pay) All relations are reduced to this. (I obey what you display) What I first wanted now I forget (That’s the way they get you to pay) What a strange coincidence When can you be free? When can you be all you’d be? When I need a break from the TV in my pocket Pops up self help on the screen

Kant held that what makes art art is : purposive purposelessness If you mapped out the chambers of this epoch’s broke heart: purposive purposelessness Beauty is forms freely playing : purposive purposelessness You’re a lovely design. Never had a function: purposive purposelessness Heart is the mediator between the brain and the hands Ads help you feel for the world market demands All shapes surface the status quo: purposive purposelessness And everyone’s an artist with a camera phone: purposive purposelessness Realism deals what’s already known: purposive purposelessness But the art of a spark reveals where we’ll go : purposive purposelessness Art is the mediator between the brain and the hands Ads creates empathy for market demands Art creates cosmos. Original origin. Purposive purposelessness : that’s the world we’re in. BK indie for Sunday brunch : purposive purposelessness Melancholy ambiance designed by robots : purposive purposelessness A post punk party plus synthesizer : purposive purposelessness Most so called artists: Advertisers : purposive purposelessness. The individual is not at war with the market or the state. The marketplace created individual. Poems that dance elated : they’re at war with the market and the state. But the marketplace created individual. Individual. Individual. I only am aware of the Wi-Fi when the server breaks down. Your poem’s like some broken equipment. Revealed design of the dirt on the ground. I only know the touch of my keychain when key’s lost and can’t be found. Your poem’s like my broken stereo: reveals sound not being around.

It’s time to stop top hat No rabbit. We must stand tall. No ruse inhabit. Be not top hat no rabbit. We must stand tall. No ruse inhabit. Scene: Rotonde. February. Clock: Nine PM. Fragments form together. Join: run on the band. In top hat. Crowd’s still. Stone pillar by the garden. My stale beer sits still. It’s a pillar on the organ. Let pillar of the hat be empty. Don’t fill with fear from past. Let pillar of the hat be empty. Stand it tall. Make it last. Let pillar of the hat be empty. Don’t fill with fear from past. Let pillar of the hat be empty. Stand it tall. Make it last. But I can break from the past at this moment if I will or can I? - if I will to deny. Testify: To stop top hat no rabbit. We must stand tall. Be example. Be a classic : Voyage fantastic. Pythagoras defined beauty: many reduced to one. But many were reduced to nothing as history rolled on. Cyclops defined truly : many voiced but eye of one. Only one eye have I as history rolls on. Cause history’s a rolling stone rolling down a hill side. Whether sliding left or right it’s always getting down. And history’s a circle. It’s turning down a hillside. Whether leaning left or right your body makes a sound. Stop top hat no rabbit. We must stand tall. No ruse inhabit. Be not top hat no rabbit We must stand tall. No ruse inhabit Well every choice is a negation of another. Yet every step springs from a father and a mother. In crowd: light spots fleshy face. Graceful lack of grace. Sings a verse ‘name escape’. Sings with me taking back days. Does he also eye himself in I? The singers I yearned for saw themselves in time. Well : maybe you’re the same as me. We see things they’ll never see. But you and I won’t live forever.

Everybody’s sad at the top of the Billboard Everybody’s sad at the Chase bank gala So many Frank Oceans down in the valley Success always comes with depression Cuz everybody’s sad Yeah everybody’s sad like you. Everybody’s sad Your heroes heartbroken like you. They’re just like you. Everyone’s sad at the top of the Billboard Everybody streams sad furniture tracks Top forty asks ‘Where is my klonopin?’ And the underground sound : folk rock depressed Cuz everybody’s sad Yeah everybody’s sad like you. Everybody’s sad Oppressors heartbroken like you. Darth Vader is sad too. Beautiful famous sad alone Studying the metrics on new phones Piping fade trades into their headphones At the top of the throne. Relating. Thrown. Beautiful fat and sad alone Studying the metrics on new phone. Piping syntax into my headphones On my toilet throne Relate cuz I’m thrown When everybody’s sad Yeah everybody’s sad like you.

Somewhere in these private minds The last one comes just in time to Clear out the chambers, sew up the lips That's the price to pay for hoping Every slip's not a slide In other words, not to get it wrong Pointless to walk when it's past time to run Secure under the weight of watchful eyes Lulled to sleep under clear, expansive skies Somewhere in these prying hearts Competing histories tear us apart We hope we won't get what we deserve Hide behind the targets in front of All the people we serve Somewhere in these private minds The last one comes just in time to Clear out the chambers, sew up the lips That's the price to pay for hoping Every slip's not a slide

about

XTRA EQUIPMENT is a new collection of BODEGA tracks from the same 2020-2021 Trout Studio sessions that spawned BROKEN EQUIPMENT. Much like the songs on BROKEN EQUIPMENT, we were trying to make these tracks extra breezy and hooky as well as more philosophically ambitious than our previous recordings. Even when in the mode of social critique, I personally tend to think of my songwriting as more literary than analytic but here the ‘The Art of Advertising’ and ‘Art and Advertising’ diptych functions as a sort of pop rock treatise on the subtle but crucial distinction between art and advertising (’Art creates cosmos’ whereas advertising ‘surface(s) status quo’). ‘Everybody’s Sad’ (the THROWN b-side) highlights and bemoans the connection between the current pop obsession with individuality and the aesthetics of melancholy (‘everybody’s sad at the top of the billboard’). ‘Top Hat No Rabbit’ (the DOERS b-side) was written coming down from a Ulysses(Joyce) induced high —> it’s a flurry of thoughts attempting to reconcile free will (necessary for any change) with my deep-seated belief (and BODEGA obsession) that all thought is determined (or ‘thrown’) by external and/ or physical stimuli. Conversely, I wrote the opening ballad ’Memorize w/ yr Heart’ (previously only available as a bonus track on the BROKEN EQUIPMENT CD) to remind myself not to get stuck in abstract mind games —> most of all philosophy should be done with the body (or at least with a steady backbeat).

In some ways every recording is a response to an earlier record; BROKEN and XTRA EQUIPMENT were written to both expand upon our previous strengths as well as explore terrain outside of the post-punk milieu we found ourselves painting in previously. I hesitate to say that any recording of a single song is ‘better’ than another (they are just different versions of a tune) but the synth and drum machine led ‘Post yr Kilimanjaro’ (a recent reworking of our nu wave jammer ‘Doers’) sounds much closer to what I had in mind when I wrote the track. We also recorded two covers very different in timbre from their original source(s): Fugazi’s ‘Provisional’ was originally recorded for a Ripcord Records comp to raise funds for an animal shelter in Scotland (we are vegans) and Stretch Arm Strong’s ‘For the Record’ is a loving homage to one of the most important band’s in my life. I spent most of my youth in Columbia, South Carolina (where Stretch are from) and it was as a teen at their all ages hardcore matinees where I first experienced DIY music in the flesh. (‘We sweat and sang together and it helped us to carry on’).
